PRIMARY THYROID LEIOMYOSARCOMA

Primary leiomyosarcoma of the thyroid gland is a rare smooth muscle sarcoma, to date approximately 30 cases have been published in the scientific literature. Patients present rapidly growing cervical mass with normal thyroid function. The diagnosis is made through the histopathological study where a mesenchymal lesion made up of malignant tumor cells is recognized, the immunohistochemical study of which shows expression of smooth muscle markers (smooth muscle actin, Desmin, H-Caldesmon). The prognosis of these patients is poor, with a survival rate of 5% to 10% in the first year despite aggressive treatment from the beginning of the disease. The case of a 66-year-old woman with primary thyroid leiomyosarcoma is presented.
