Provision of nuclear medicine for thyroid cancer. Colombia 2019

Abstract

Objective: describe the current offer of nuclear medicine departments (NMDs) authorized by local authorities in 2019 in Colombia and understand the installed, operational, technological and human capacity available for the care of thyroid cancer patients.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was done based on NMDs registered in the special registry of health service providers (REPS) under codes 383 (nuclear medicine outpatient consultation) and 715 (support for diagnostic and therapeutic complementation (nuclear medicine)) - through July 25, 2019. A closed-question structured survey related with the facility characteristics was used.

Results: 87.6% of the NMDs registered in REPS participated, 94.4% are private. The greatest NMD concentration is found in Bogotá D.C, Valle de Cauca and Antioquia, as these cities have greater capacity in terms of infrastructure, equipment and staff. Of the facilities visited, only 42 administer I-131 therapies for thyroid cancer patients. Currently 47.2% of NMDs implemented a liquid radioactive waste management system, for either I-131 or other radionuclides.

Conclusion: Colombian NMDs have made important advances to improve installed, technological, operational and human capacity. It is necessary to continue with national, departmental and institutional efforts to respond to the needs of the population that requires this specialty.
