Assessing Data Quality of Population-based Cancer Register of Manizales, Colombia

Objective: To assessthe quality of data in the ManizalesCancer Register (RPCa-M).
Methods: A total of 3416 cases were analyzed for the period 2003-2007. The dimensions evaluated were: comparability, completeness, and validity. Comparisons were made with the Cancer Register of Cali (RPCC) and American records published in “ Cancer Incidence in Five Continents” (CI5C) for incidence rates by site and sex, reasons for death, and percentages of cases with morphological verification, cases reported by death certificate only, and cases with unknown primary site.
Results: The RPCa-M follow the definitions contained in the International Classification of Diseases for Oncology - 3rd edition (ICD-O 3) and is located in Group A of comparability with rates of morphological verification of over 80%, and percentage of locations unknown or poorly deÞned and an unknown diagnosis base of less than 10%in both sexes. Statistical tests showed no significant differences in mortality ratios / incidence, or morphological verification percentages expected for the region. No separate register of tumors was found for pediatric populations.
Conclusions: The RPCa-M generates reliable, valid, and close to the completeness of the epidemiology of cancer in Manizales, considering the local infrastructure, the time of registering activities, and the absence of mandatory reporting rules on Cancer in Colombia, which has been endorsed by the acceptance of the data by the IARC.
